Theodora moves further into new sound with 'highs'

When Way Out hit our streaming channels in March, we saw singer-songwriter Theodora expanding her R&B sound with the help of producer FlightSch. Not only that, she also let the protagonist play the role of a heartbreaker – switching up the mood for once.

In her latest track, she drives the listener back to self-analysis and leaves one excavating the heart for the right words to say. Tagging it as ‘one of the sadder songs of the lot’, Theodora admits that it was a rocky process when it came to writing the lyrics.

“Prior to writing this song, I’d been trying to put new material out and just write more for three months. The stuff that I’d been writing had not hit home or just didn’t feel right."
Pressure and frustration hit an all time high as she had already sent a demo to her producer, Evan Low (aka Evanturetime). What followed was one night of inspiration streak, when she managed to write the first verse and chorus of the song quite effortlessly.

“I knew that this was what I wanted the song to sound like. I went back, told him to completely disregard the demo that I’d sent and to go with this instead.”

Since day one, Theodora has steered clear of revealing the exact meanings of her songs. On one occasion, she explains that she much prefers having listeners write their own story to her music rather than pointing them to a fixed narrative. Her songwriting very well proves her point, as it leaves room for interpretation at free will.

Theodora first came into the public eye in 2014 with the aim of eventually releasing an album. The following year, she introduced Lines – her first song ever to be put on a streaming service. In three short years, the singer on her guitar has evolved into an artist challenging her soundscapes in the production studio. With each song release, Theodora inscribes a more visible disposition to her work.

“Coming from JULY as a new start, I wanted to figure out where I could push in terms of production, and the sort of sounds that I could explore.”
